Balancing Authority

BHE Montana owns and operates the Power Watch Balancing Authority, registered with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) since 2008. The Power Watch Balancing Authority is also certified as a Balancing Authority Area (BAA) by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC).

What is a balancing authority area?

A balancing authority area contains two or more of the following items, within an electrically metered boundary: 

  • Generation 
  • Transmission 
  • Loads 
  • Interchange schedules

What is the role of a balancing authority?

A balancing authority is an entity responsible for maintaining balance between electric generation, load, and/or interchange schedules within a geographic area.
